This course provides an overview of the theory and practice of biblical counseling. The major approaches to biblical counseling will be overviewed and analyzed regarding their biblical and theological foundations. The student will develop an awareness of the various options regarding approaches to biblical counseling and develop skills to apply various approaches to the practice of biblical counseling.

This course provides the theological framework through which a biblical counselor analyzes the human person, the human struggle and moves toward resolution. Christian theology provides authority and guidance regarding the understanding of the human person, the reality of human sinfulness, the person and work of Jesus, the transformative work of the Holy Spirit, and many other aspects of Christian doctrine that are important to human transformation.

This class explores various concepts of psychology and theories or approaches to counseling and their interaction with biblical counseling. This class will overview the various theories of psychology and counseling approaches and assess their compatibility with the Christian worldview along with assessing the use of various techniques found within other theoretical frameworks and their utility to be used by the biblical counselor.

This class discusses the ethical and legal issues in biblical counseling. The class will address issues of appropriate counselor/client disclosure, issues of billing, scope of treatment offered, limits of competency, and other pertinent legal and ethical issues. The biblical counselor wants to offer care that maintains integrity of their firmly held Christian beliefs while giving appropriate disclosure to the client seeking help.

This class reviews contemporary issues in biblical counseling. These issues could include but are not limited to, philosophical and scientific assessment of the human person, human sexuality, ability for human change, and contemporary mental health issues. The goal of the class is for the biblical counselor to understand the cultural moment and speak competently to the contemporary moment as a biblical counselor.

This course models and applies various practices of biblical counseling. The counselor must utilize interventions and techniques and encourage the practice of skills within the counseling moment. The focus of the class is the application of biblical counseling practices and utilizing these skills in the biblical counseling session.
